Treatment Approaches Preparing for Surgery

Before preparing for wound debridement in the operating room or other wound surgery, your primary doctor should perform a thorough physical examination and write a medical clearance note saying you can undergo surgery. All tests required for surgery should be performed within one month of the procedures (except for NIFs and X-rays). Common pre-surgical tests include:

Your safety comes first. Knowing as much as possible about your current medical status and medical history helps us to select the best possible surgical approach and anesthesia. You should write a complete list of all your medications, including the medication name, dosage (mg), and frequency (how many times a day taken). You should provide copies of that list to the Wound Healing Center and your surgeon, updating it regularly to reflect any changes in your medications.

To help reduce the risk of complications during surgery, you should also tell us about your complete medical history—including all current and previous illnesses and any previous operations.

If your physician tells you that you are NPO after midnight, you must not eat any food or drink any liquids after midnight. If you need to take medication on the day of your surgery, take it with small sips of water.

Please do not hesitate to ask your doctor any questions you might have about your surgery or recovery process.
